Nigerian Professor A Maths Problem Over a Century Old

A maths problem, which has gone more than 150 years without a solution, has finally been solved by Nigerian academic Dr. Opeyemi Enoch. The Riemann Hypothesis was first proposed by Bernhard Riemann in 1859. As the first person to provide a solution, Dr. Enoch has scooped a million dollar prize.

NIGERIA BAGS WORLD CUP ...as Osimhen and Nwakali bag individual honours

The Nigerian National team the Golden Eaglets made the nation proud as they finished as winners of the recently concluded FIFA U20 World Cup after defeating their Malian counterparts by two goals to nil. 

The Emmanuel Amunike tutored side is packed with outstanding individual talents but also proved to be a cohesive unit. 

Also two players walked away from the competition held in Chile with two individual prizes; team captain Kelechi Nwakali and the competition's top scorer Victor Osimhen won the Golden ball/bronze boot and Silver ball/Golden boot respectively.

One potential down side to this victory is the poor management of the players by the Nigerian football authorities and more importantly their respective agents. Also it is important that these players especially Osimhen and Nwakali don't see themselves as superstars already and consequently adopt a lackadaisical attitude. However the signs are good so far.

The striker, who names Côte d’Ivoire forward Didier Drogba as his role model, more than lived up to expectations in Chile after finding the net in all seven games at the competition. Osimhen put his side 1-0 up on four occasions and his effort in the final – his tenth goal overall – set a new tournament record, beating the previous best-mark set by Côte d’Ivoire’s Souleymane Coulibaly in 2011 and France’s Florent Sinama Pongolle in 2001. Reports flittering in suggests that new Super-eagles coach Sunday Oliseh wants Liverpool FC sensation Jordan Ibe to don the green and white jersey of the Nigerian national side. Ibe is qualified to play for Nigeria by virtue of his parentage as his father is Nigerian.

However, the Nigerian manager isn't the only one interested in the winger as England are looking at fast-tracking his progress to the English senior national side. NFF SACK STEPHEN KESHI!!

Stephen Keshi has been relieved of his duties as coach of the Nigerian national team, according to a statement on the Nigerian Football Federation's website.

Keshi had been in hot water in recent weeks after his name turned up on a short list of contenders to potentially take over for Herve Renard as coach of the Ivory Coast national team.

At the time, NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said the NFF would open a full investigation to determine whether or not Keshi had indeed applied for the job.

The statement from the NFF Executive Committee said the decision was made after "having thoroughly reviewed the reports and findings of the NFF Disciplinary Committee and NFF Technical and Development Committee, as well as having reviewed the actions and inactions of Mr. Stephen Keshi, in the performance of his duties as Super Eagles' Head Coach, which we found to lack the required commitment to achieve the Federation's objectives as set out in the Coach's employment contract."

The statement went on to quote the provisions of Clause 4.3 of the employment contract between Keshi and the NFF and to say the federation would exercise their option to terminate the employment of Keshi with the team immediately.

Corporate Investors and Nigerian Premier League: A question of gain!

Nigeria is a country where the citizenry are absolutely football (soccer) crazy and most times fanatical in their support for the national team as well as football clubs which they support (mainly European/foreign). Therefore it becomes a tad puzzling why the Nigerian professional league does not have as much follower-ship as the foreign leagues on one hand. The other question is what can be done to improve corporate participation in the Nigerian league.

Rumours to the effect that Nigeria's richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote intends to purchase English premiership club Arsenal FC. Opinions have been varied some commentators including yours truly are of the opinion that the billionaire should focus inward at least initially, after all charity begins at home or so they say. A recent Thisday Newspaper quoted the head of the League Management Company Shehu Dikko stating that the billionaire should focus on Nigeria before else where.

While other commentators are of the opinion that its purely a business decision and as such should not be guided by national sentiments. There is some merit in this position; what would be the gain of Dangote if he purchases a Nigerian club say Sunshine Stars in economic terms. 

This therefore in my opinion should serve as a motivation to the NFF and the LMC to give corporate organisations a reason to invest in the NPFL. 

Football should be seen as a business and not a social responsibility or calling

Corporate entities always look at everything from the standpoint of its effect on their balance sheet. 

The LMC should closely study the MLS model and adapt it to the Nigerian and African situation in order to improve content and additionally consider the exploitation of Television broadcast rights.

After all its a question of gain!!!
